The Written Lie - CD, or Digital Download
2001 Immortal Recordings (Ire) release, The Written Lie.
In 2001, the Rocket Soul Choir started to stretch beyond the confines of an acoustic-rock, three piece. Written and recorded mostly in Leslie's home studio during a year of crippling depression, some of the best songs are the ones that are brutally open. Slowly Eroding and Standard Questionnaire cover the futility of stitching a normal life together while watching the seams fall apart. The Written Lie and Testosterone share an aggressive determination to not live within the confines of a label and love gets touched upon via Selfish Strain, the encouraging Not Over Yet and I Crave's driving groove. Made Up My Mind and Rubber Love were superbly recorded in Minneapolis, with long time bassist, Jason Wahl and drummer/engineer, Michael Jorgenson. Elsewhere the record is driven by the much missed drummer, Gary Morrison, the thoughtful bass playing of future RSC guitarist, Paul Woods and the eclectic and infectious percussion of Emma Doran. A raw and sometimes painful album, but one with tracks that are persistent. Album closer, Criminal Everyday was a stalwart inclusion on many "Best of NI..." compilations and even garnered a nomination for the Orange County Music Awards and also the attention of luminary producer, Kim Fowley.
Leslie Rich and the Rocket Soul Choir’s 2001 album, The Written Lie. The Last album to be recorded and released before Leslie’s eventual emigration to the USA. The album covered a dark period in Leslie’s life, which makes for a sometimes harsh listen, forcing the listener to ask themselves questions about conformity, the stigma around mental health, and tectonic-sized shifts in life. An alternative rocker in places, built around Leslie’s frenetic style of acoustic guitar, it was the finger picked Criminal Everyday that garnered a nomination at the Orange County Music Awards and caught the attention of producer Svengali, Kim Fowley.
